Contract Compounding of Engineering Plastics
In order to meet customer demands, PolyComp GmbH is investing in the expansion of its production. Strategic reasons also play a role here.
PolyComp GmbH, based in Norderstedt near Hamburg, is a contract manufacturer and licence producer for engineering plastics. The company has been operating under its current name since 2000, after the company was created as a management buy-out from the former Borealis Compounds GmbH. Since 2013, it has been part of the internationally active Feddersen Group based in Hamburg.
Competence, experience, excellent production capability and comprehensive service form the basis for successful cooperation with international customers. A long-term, cooperative partnership and the highest level of confidentiality and reliability in all areas of business have top priority.
“With our striving for quality, continuous improvement and a qualified implementation of customer-specific requirements, we fulfil all needs around the contract manufacturing of plastics,” says Jac Loos, Divisional Sales Manager at PolyComp.
On the Way to Full Service Toll Compounding
The constant further development of the company revealed new potential in the supply chain in the direction of full-service toll compounding. For this reason, three new raw material silos were installed in May 2021 by the company P+W Metallbau GmbH & Co. KG were installed, bringing the total capacity in this area to 9 silos and increasing the capacity from 500 to 600 tonnes. In this context, the conveyor technology was also modernised with components from AZO GmbH & Co. KG. The number of finished goods silos remained constant at 6 or 500 t.
Modernising the Machinery
For strategic reasons, the compounder's machinery is also continuously optimised and rejuvenated. In the first quarter of 2021, another FED 72 MTS twin-screw extruder from sister company FEDDEM GmbH & Co. KG, Sinzig, was installed to replace an older BUSS Kneader. The entire control technology was also updated with systems from Bruckmann Steuerungstechnik GmbH (BSG).
PolyComp creates additional supply security for its customers, as FEDDEM extruders are operated both there and at AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH, which also belongs to the group of companies. This means that production can be relocated to Niederzissen or from Niederzissen to Norderstedt at peak times without additional testing.
Through the modernisation and associated digitalisation of the plant technology, the production capacity in Norderstedt was expanded from 22.5 kt to 26 kt. Two more plants are also to be replaced by the proven technology by 2023, which will also simplify and reduce maintenance and spare parts inventory. This goes hand in hand with further capacity assurance.
